Stone: always and forever.
With many stones and over many days,
with age-old passions,
man has raised his towers
with his common hands.
(Luc Plamondon – Pasquale Panella, Notre Dame de Paris)
Man’s attachment to stone is ancestral: since the dawn of time, instincts, needs and aspirations have been associated with it. Whether it was a rock to hurl in self-defence against an animal or squared blocks to build a tower, stone has always been a fundamental ally of human beings, some of whom, from the most ancient times, decided to make it their reason for living. Families who owned a quarry, perhaps small but nonetheless most precious, guarded it jealously and exploited it wisely, from generation to generation.
Silvia and Simone Mugnani descend from one of these families: day after day they carry on, with pride and commitment, the tradition of their ancestors, originally from Settignano (Florence). The Mugnani were called to work the stone of Matraia in the mid-16th century, on the occasion of the construction of the village bell tower; the stone they had long worked in Settignano was in fact similar to that of Matraia, and they had a reputation as expert craftsmen. Looking at the bell tower, we notice that one of its stones bears the date 1547: it is the beginning of the Mugnani adventure with the stone of Matraia, a particular, compact sandstone that does not let water permeate and does not exfoliate, hence a very long-lasting material, since it does not deteriorate. This family’s business went on over the centuries, growing gradually, until, in the 1960s, the true “revolution” arrived, thanks to Germano and Giovanni (respectively the father and uncle of Silvia and Simone): the two brothers, through targeted investments, increased the spaces and made the processing more mechanised, in step with the times.
Some decades have passed. Now Silvia and Simone carry on the business with dedication, earning many accolades both in Italy and abroad: they were even among the protagonists of the works for the Museo degli Innocenti in Florence, in the most prestigious setting of the Spedale degli Innocenti. They are proud of this success: to want the stone of Matraia today, with the very many stones available to customers, means a precise choice in terms of material and style. For the future, the wish is to bring the stone of Matraia more and more to foreign lands, to contexts far from ours, making it coexist with different materials, to create new and surprising combinations of style.
Man has travelled in space, has become hyper-technological, and yet he still devotes himself to stone; that must mean something…
